John Benjamin Hadley


John Benjamin Hadley was born 24 December 1853 in Baldwin County, Alabama. He was the son of John Hadley (1820 - 1907) and Nellie Johnson (1819 - 1899). John married Sarah Cruit (03 August 1853 - 26 March 1939), who was the daughter of Gilbert and Louise Glasby Cruit. John and Sarah had four children:

    1. John Cruit Hadley (11 February 1874 - 27 August 1909)
    2. Thomas J. Hadley (18 March 1876 - 04 July 1951)
    3. Sarah Edith (Sally) Hadley (05 June 1879 - 25 December 1928)
    4. Joseph William Hadley (25 January 1881 - 08 April 1927)

John died in 1884 while racing horses. He was killed when the girth of his saddle broke during a race and he was thrown against a tree. John is buried inside the fence of a small family cemetery near Seven Mile Springs, Alabama. This portrait was painted after his death.
