Thomas Clarkson McCollum was born 2 September 1830 in Indiana. He was the son of Joseph and Mary Hobson McCollum. On 25 October 1854 he married Ruth Ann Hadley (13 August 1833 - January 1902). Ruth Ann was the daughter of Elias Hadley (1804 - 1860) and Deborah Doane Hadley (1811 - ??), and was born in Morgan County, Indiana.
Thomas and Ruth McCollum had nine children: Alpheus William (23 May 1856), Elzina (8 June 1858), Caroline (14 December 1859), Almeda (28 April 1862), Alwilda (02 June 1864), Alvin Hadley (26 January 1866), Thomas Sylvester (14 August 1868), William G. (10 February 1871), Clarence L. (21 March 1876). In the spring of 1855, Thomas moved with his bride from Indiana to Guthrie County, Iowa, where he had entered several hundred acres of land the previous year. His land was located about one and a half miles north of where the city of Stuart was later founded. His wife's parents also moved to Iowa from Indiana in 1855. Thomas was one of the early prominent settlers of Guthrie County, Iowa. His nine children did not remain in Iowa, but all moved to California. Thomas McCollum died on the fourth of September 1895, and Ruth Ann Hadley McCollum died in January of 1902. |
