Found Photos & Unknown Hadleys

Unknown Photo #16

This photo is a copy of a tintype found among photos belonging to Nora Smith, granddaughter of Jesse HADLEY (1812-1899) and Phebe (SMITH) HADLEY. Tintypes can be as early as 1853, and as late as the 1930's. I know enough about the other family lines of Nora Smith to be fairly certain that the family composition in this photo could not fit any of her other ancestors, except perhaps the Hadleys. I thought at first the photo was taken around 1860-1870, but in comparing the clothing of the women to photos of the Victorian era, I found an example of the plumed hat in hats of the 1880's and 1890's.  The smooth hairstyles on the women, and the dress on the little girl in the center look like examples in the 1890's.

Jesse HADLEY was born in 1812, so would have been 78 in 1890, and none of the men in the photo look that old to me. Jesse HADLEY was in Harrison County, Texas in 1850, Erath County in 1860-1880, and in McCulloch County, Texas in the 1890's. He died in 1899 and was buried in Coleman County. Some of his children and grandchildren lived in Erath, Bosque, and Taylor Counties of Texas.

Perhaps one of the other Texas Hadleys will be able to identify some of the people in this photo by matching it to their Hadley family photos.
